Known to be one of the major expatriate areas by the Europeans and other Westerners, River Valley has a fabulous heritage. It stands nearby Orchard Road and the CBD and features some of the most outstanding restaurants and bars in town. These places of attraction are at walking distance from River valley’s condos, thereby making it the most popular residential area. However, such development has occurred very recently.
The golden history of River Valley dates back to the 1960s when the government of Singapore took up the redevelopment of the area by cleaning the Singapore River. The project also included removing the squatters, lighter companies, and hawkers that conducted operations around the area.
The commercialization of the area started with the construction of Liang Court, the first of its kind commercial building that became functional in 1983. Another mixed development project UE Square started its operations after a decade. Singapore’s economic journey found a strong track with the Concept Plan of URA in 1991. With the area’s redevelopment, both Robertson Quay and Clarke Quay found their usage in constructing a further residential, hotel, and entertainment sectors.
The river has tremendous influence in characterizing the entire area from the Great World City to the Boat Quay. The advent of Civilisation has seen the establishment of innumerable restaurants, bars, and hotels that witness a huge crowd throughout the evening and nights on any given day of the week. Also, a large number of condos were further developed around the river in the last decade.
The Zion Food Court’s renovation is one of the latest developments of the island that has a fabulous waterfront setting. However, despite being one of Singapore’s most popular residential areas, its essence has decreased in the current times. Zouk nightclub that found its iconic presence at the south of the Jiak Kim Bridge and became the River Valley area’s signature club from 1991 to 2016 has also been moved to its present location in Clarke Quay.
Currently, the authorities are putting all stakes at the River Valley Master Plan to remodel and enhance the area for a better future. So, with the MRT line placement, it is estimated that the prices of the properties and the population of the area will take a steep rise. This project is going to take a huge plunge for the residents here. 2021 will also witness the Thomson-East Coast Line’s completion and its respective station at the Great World City. This shopping mall was refurbished for a brief period, thereby making it operational once again in 2019.
The Kin Seng precinct is now left with a fabulous spot for reconstruction, with one of its major nightclubs marking its relocation. The former Zouk site has seen a legal tussle with Frasers Property winning the suit of almost $100 million. They are currently constructing the Riviere project in the location.
